Daily Drabble - 11/30/17 - autumn

Prompt – Autumn Characters – Token/Cartman Word Count – 470

Notes – this takes place in my bsc au, which I’m slowly crafting together with @toydrill! I, uh, don’t know where this little idea came from but??? It’s totally here now and, like with everything I post, about half-fleshed out. Lmao.

  There’s a mosaic on the trees.   If Token stares at them long enough, he can almost make out shapes in the fading colors. He can’t decide if it’s unsettling or not, but either way it’s hard to look elsewhere now that Token’s taken notice.   Cartman’s sprawled out on the grass next to him, limbs splayed out and head pillowed on his backpack. There’s a fading bruise on the side of his face, another on the nape of his neck. “Fuck them.”   “Yeah,” says Token, but he curls a little bit tighter around his bent up knees. His own bottom lip is split and sore. “I guess.”   “You can do way better than that, Token. They’re dicks.”   “They’re on the same team as me. It’s not like I can just ditch them.”   “Report them,” says Cartman, even though he knows from experience that it won’t help. They don’t share the same gym class but Token’s heard the stories, the rumors, the spit out insults when Cartman shows up at the house for a movie night with a black eye or a missing jacket.   Gym class is kind of like the end of fall; it’s a different realm from the rest of the world, where everything is dying and full of life at the same time; where people can get away with things most others can’t.   The coach turns a blind eye to rough housing that takes it a step further, or insults spit out at the end of class, and the world turns a blind eye to falling leaves in the shapes of rabbits and pretty colors that decorate the ground.   Token shrugs, sharp shoulders bunching up around his ears. “This is probably the only time when the pond actually looks nice.”   Cartman goes with the change in conversation. He’s probably used to jumping subjects by now. “Yeah, I guess. The water still smells like shit.”   “I think that’s how autumn is supposed to smell. Outdoors, I mean.”   “What, like garbage?”   “Like…old things,” says Token, chin digging into his knees. “I don’t know. It smells like the trees look, I guess.”   Cartman snorts. “Sure, I guess. I’d rather have my autumn smell like gingerbread cookies.” A pause, and then, “you wanna go hit up my house and get some?”   Token’s brows furrow. “Cookies?”   “Yeah.” It takes a moment for Cartman to get up. His leg was bothering him anyway, and getting thrown around the locker room didn’t help any. “I made ‘em last night. Come on, dumbass. That’ll be better to sit around and smell.”
